“Spectacular Evgeni Onegin at Harpa” was the headline of a five-star review by Jónas Sen from Fréttablaðið newspaper. The premiere of the Icelandic Opera of the Russian opera Evgeni Onegin by Tchaikovsky was in full Eldborg hall at Harpa last Saturday. The standing ovation from guests at the end of the show was extra-long this time and well worthy.
Jónas Sen wrote that this was “one of the best opera from the Icelandic Opera in a long time.” “Another victory for the Icelandic Opera,” wrote Silja Aðalsteinsdóttir of TMM. María Kristjánsdóttir from the National Radio said that Evgeni Onegin “is a show that no one should miss out”. Hlín Agnarsdóttir from Kastljós said that the opera was very successful and that Helgi Jónsson the singers had done “absolutely fantastic”.
There are over 100 people participating in the show that is directed by Anthony Pilavachi who is a world-class opera director and received the prestigious Echo award in 2012. The title role is in the hands of Andrey Zhilikhovsky, from the Bolshoj theater in Moscow. Conductor is Benjamin Levy, lighting designed is Bergsteinn Björn Guðmundsson, Eva Signy Berger is the stage designer and the costume designer is María Th. Ólafsdóttir. Þóra Einarsdóttir soprano plays the role of the young Tatjana and Elmar Gilbertsson tenor sings the role of the poet Lenski.
The show is subtitled into Icelandic and English but performed in Russian. The Icelandic Opera has added an extra performance of Eugene Onegin Saturday Nov 19th at 8pm, as the performances Oct 29, Nov 6 and Nov 12 are almost sold out.. Tickets are available here.
