Maximus Musikus is without doubt the most famous musical mouse in Iceland. The books about him have enjoyed tremendous popularity with Icelandic children and are now becoming available around the world. They are available in German, Faroese, Korean, and in English throughout the world. Both the writer and the illustrator behind the books, Hallfríður Ólafsdóttir and Thórarinn Már Baldursson, are members of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. The conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy is a special patron of the project.
The author, Hallfríður Ólafsdóttir, is the principal flautist of the ISO, and the illustrator, Thórarinn Már Baldursson, plays the viola. Both have extensive experience and knowledge of classical music and a burning desire to share it with the younger generation. Maximus regularly makes appearances in Harpa at children’s concerts or events, and a special mouse-hole, complete with colouring books and an iPad, is located on the ground floor of Harpa at the 12 Tónar music store, where children are welcome to spend time.
“Maximus Musicus is one of those rare books that effortlessly manages to attract children into the unique and fascinating world of the Symphony Orchestra, thereby introducing them to the world’s greatest music – a wonderful achievement!”
