Jon Kabat-Zinn, Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts was the first person to implement the practice of Mindfulness in modern day medicine and psychology. In 1979 he developed Mindfulness Based Stressed Reduction, MBSR, the first ever eight week mindfulness course on stress reduction. Research shows that MBSR is indeed beneficial and is now being taught the world over.
We could say that a “mindfulness-revolution” has taken place in the western world and it is gaining recognition in all facets of life, e.g. education, health care, judiciary, in the work place, business and sports. His books have been on the bestseller lists and have been published in over 40 languages.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D, is Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he founded the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society (in 1995), and (in 1979) its world-renown Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Clinic. He is the author of ten books, including the bestsellers Full Catastrophe Living, Wherever You Go, There You Are, and Mindfulness for Beginners. With Professor Mark Williams, he is co-editor of Mindfulness: Diverse Perspectives on its Meaning, Origins, and Applications (2013). His books are published in over 40 languages. His work has contributed to a growing movement of mindfulness into mainstream institutions such as medicine, psychology, health care, neuroscience, schools, higher education, business, social justice, criminal justice, prisons, the law, technology, government, and professional sports. Jon Kabat-Zinn will lead a day of meditation and discussion to help us in the cultivation of peace of mind and inner wisdom. This day of practice will appeal to all who are interested in learning to face the challenges of daily life and wish to improve the quality of their lives.
In this experiential workshop, we will practice a range of methods for cultivating sanity and wellbeing, namely mindfulness in its multiple manifestations.
Please wear comfortable and casual clothing that will allow you both to stretch and lie down on the floor. Please bring your own mat and pillow if you can and if not there will be seats available.

This is a half-day workshop with Jon Kabat-Zinn and his wife Myla. In this session they will share their insights on how mindfulness can make it easier for us to meet each child with empathy, acceptance and respect.
This workshop is designed for parents, grandparents, and parents-to-be, as well as anyone working with or caring for children. Parenting with mindfulness can enhance the wellbeing of children and parents alike, and bring greater empathy, acceptance and respect for each child’s unique being into family life. In difficult moments, we can sometimes find ourselves reacting automatically, in the grip of deeply engrained and often destructive patterns of thinking and feeling that may stem in part from our own experiences as children. When we are not aware of them, these habits of mind are more likely to lead to reactions and behaviors that are not in our child’s best interest nor in our own. Through the intentional cultivation of mindfulness, which can be thought of as open-hearted non-judgmental awareness, it is possible to navigate the inner landscape of our own fears, anxieties and judgments, and choose more appropriate and wiser ways of responding effectively in challenging situations with our children.
Using guided meditations and simple mindfulness practices, Myla and Jon will explore how the cultivation of mindfulness in everyday life can help us to work with the struggles and difficulties we may face with children at different ages, as well as to be more present for the joys and simple pleasures that are inherent in parenting. Through large and small group dialogue, we will explore the “middle way” of mindful parenting – fostering connection, trust, and inner resilience within a framework that includes age appropriate expectations, limits and responsibilities.

Myla Kabat-Zinn, B.S.N., R.N. assisted at births both in the hospital and at home. During those years she taught childbirth education classes based on mindful awareness. She has also worked on environmental issues affecting children’s health. Myla teaches workshops on mindful parenting in the U.S. and in Europe. She is a mother of three children and a grandmother.
