The Harpa International Music Academy offers an intensive seminar in the art of string quartet playing from August 1st-6th. The seminar is led by Sibbi Bernhardsson, Professor of Violin at the Oberlin Conservatory and former member of the world-renowned Pacifica String Quartet.
The Academy’s opening concert will feature movements from string quartets by Shostakovich, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Ravel, performed by students who participated in the string quartet seminar under the tutelage of Sibbi Bernharðsson.
The string quartet is one of the most prominent chamber ensembles in classical music. The string quartet was developed by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, who established this musical genre by composing 68 quartets starting in the 1750s. Almost all major composers have since written string quartets, which are often highly personal in nature. To perfect the art of string quartet playing is a lifelong task, which musicians all around the world have striven for. Today, there are many professional string quartets that keep alive this intimate and powerful music and commission new works from living composers.
