An Afternoon of Accordion Music

The accordion club ”Félag harmonikuunnenda  í Reykjavík,” was founded on the 8th of September in 1977.  The club has arranged many events, for example dances, meetings for lovers of accordion music as well as our big summer festival during  the bank holiday weekend in the beginning of August which will now be held at Borg in Árnessýsla in South Iceland.

The international accordion day is on the 6th of May but the Icelandic union of accordionists, “Samband íslenskra harmonikuunnenda” (Association of Icelandic Accordion Enthusiasts) has decided that the first Saturday in May will be celebrated to honor the accordion. Due to the unusual circumstances the concert had to be postponed and is held this year on Ascension Day. Each club will determine its own programme.

This year, our club will be performing at Harpa Concert Hall for which we are very grateful. FHUR is now busy  preparing for the big festival of Icelandic accordion clubs which will be held in Stykkishólmur on the 2 -5 July this summer. We have been rehearsing some evergreens such as El Cumbanchero  and also classical items such as Dvorák’s Humoresque and the exciting Spanish  piece España Cañe.  We will also be playing traditional  dance music.  The well-known musician Reynir Jónasson, an honorary member of the club and a member of our accordion band, will play as soloist in the beginning. We hope everyone will enjoy the music.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome!
