The HARPA Welcome Series
presents home concerts with young musicians. It reaches out to those who have recently finished their studies abroad, inviting them to introduce themselves and their accomplishments to the audience at home, thus giving them a platform and an opening into professional life as musicians. Some young artists create their professional ground abroad and this series offers a possibility for our audience to follow their progress. Others come home to nurture other young talents and play a part in the extensive Icelandic musical scene. The Harpa Welcome Series shares with you our best young international Icelandic musicians: vocalists and instrumentalists, composers and ensembles of every genre — at home—in Reykjavik’s extraordinary Harpa Concert Hall.
On the season’s first concert in the Harpa Welcome Home series, jazz guitarist Mikael Máni Ásmundsson performs music written by Bob Dylan . The idea behind “Lyrics Trough Music” is to interpret Bob Dylan’s lyrics through the instrument. The method Mikael uses while playing the songs is to mix written arrangements and improvisations. In the written part the aim is to bring to life the emotions in the lyrics, while he plays the melody on the guitar the lyric is the core of the interpretation of the piece and the performance is inspired by it.
Before the concert a booklet designed by Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir will be distributed, with the lyrics to the 8 songs Mikael will be performing. The audience will then be able to control their individual experience of the music by choosing whether they want to just listen or read the lyrics Dylan wrote to connect with the songs in another way.
Mikael Máni Ásmundsson graduated from the Conservatory in Amsterdam in June 2018. He studied with celebrated jazz guitarist Jesse van Ruller. Before going to Amsterdam he studied at the FÍH jazz school with Hilmar Jenssonar og Sigurður Flosason. In 2017 his first album “Staigjt home” introducing the duo “Marína & Mikael” was nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards in the category jazz and blues. He recently made his first recordings with his own compositions and the album “Bobby” will be released in 2019.
Presented in cooperation with the Association of Icelandic Musicians.
The jazz concerts in the Harpa Welcome series take place in the beautiful Björtuloft hall on the 5th floor at 8pm.
