Hansel and Gretel – a fairytale for the brave

This well known fairytale opera for families by Engelbert Humperdinck, based on the story by the brothers Grimm, will be staged in Harpa and premiéred on November 25th. The libretto is by the sister of the composer; Adelheid Wette, but the opera will be performed in Icelandic in translation by Þorsteinn Gylfason.

In the leading roles are young opera singers that are making their debut at the Icelandic Opera; Arnheiður Eiríksdóttir as Hansel and Jóna Kolbrúnardóttir as Gretel. Oddur A. Jónsson is Peter the father andHildigunnur Einarsdóttir is Gertrud the mother. Dóra Steinunn Ármannsdóttir will interpret the Gingerbread Witch and Kristín Mantyla is Sandman the Sleep Fairy. The Graduale choir of Langholtskirkja will perform in the production.

Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason the music Director of the Icelandic Opera will conduct and the stage director will be Þórunn SigþórsdóttirEva Signý Berger is the set designer and María Th. Ólafsdóttir designes the costumesLighting designer is Jóhann Friðrik Ágústsson.
