DesignTalks 2017

Brut Nature

DesignTalks is a day filled with inspirational talks by leading international design creatives on the relevance and impact of design.

The confirmed speakers at DesignTalks 2017 include: Christien Meindertsma, one of the most thought-provoking designers in recent years, who through raw materials and products aims to regain understanding of processes that have become so distant in industrialization, such as with PIG 05049; Ersin Han Ersin creative dir. of the project ITEOTA by Marshmallow Laser Feast, a creative studio exploring technology to make work that reinterprets the idea of human perception; Michele Degen searches beyond the visible trying to break norms and overcome deadlocked ways of thinking with her project Vulva Versa addressing the taboo of vaginas in society. Alexander Taylor, a British industrial designer, entrepreneur and innovation consultant for adidas, who recently designed the Adidas x Parley shoe, with the sport’s brand, where the upper is made entirely from ocean plastic, and Paul Bennett, Chief Creative Officer at IDEO, a global design company, known as a pioneer of human-centered design, with their most recent project Powerful Now that sets out to redefine aging. Paul will also be moderating the event.

For DesignTalks 2017 we feel it’s time to explore our relationship with nature – with each other – and ourselves. We set out to explore if and how uncertainty may be reinforcing our quest for the pure, the authentic, the raw. for beauty – and perhaps ugliness too. How we increasingly seek to reconnect with nature and ourselves through heightened senses, sometimes controversially mediated through technology while in other cases, through authentic experiences. All this while cities are struggling with growth and inclusion, citizens with cohabitation and we’re running as fast as we can to save the planet – and ourselves.

DesignTalks is curated by Hlin Helga Gudlaugsdottir, Design Thinking Consultant at Capacent. Hlín Helga specialises in design for social innovation and future thinking. Co-moderator of DesignTalks 2017 is Paul Bennett of IDEO.

DesignTalks is the keynote event of DesignMarch, Iceland’s annual design festival. The seminar is produced by Iceland Design Centre with support from the City of Reykjavik and Arion Bank.
