    Welcome home - Classical Sundays

    06.11.16 | Time 17:00

The HARPA Welcome Series presents home concerts with young musicians. It reaches out to those who have recently finished their studies abroad, inviting them to introduce themselves and their accomplishments to the audience at home, thus giving them a platform and an opening into professional life as musicians. Some young artists create their professional ground abroad and this series offers a possibility for our audience to follow their progress. Others come home to nurture other young talents and play a part in the extensive Icelandic musical scene. The Harpa Welcome Series shares with you our best young international Icelandic musicians: vocalists and instrumentalists, composers and ensembles of every genre — at home—in Reykjavik’s extraordinary Harpa Concert Hall. Presented in cooperation with the Association of Icelandic Musicians. The concerts are a part of Harpa´s Classical Sundays series and take place at 5 pm in the open space on the first floor. Tónleikarnir fara fram í Hörpuhorni í opnu rými á annari hæð og eru skipulagiðir í samstarfi við FÍH.

He won the Eurovision Young Musicians contest in 2006 and received the Danish Crown Prince Couple's Prize in 2009. Iceland Symphony: Víkingur and Tortelier

    17.11.16 | Time 19:30

Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky are among the titans of 20th-century composition. This concert includes seldom-performed pieces for piano and orchestra, Strauss' Burleske and Stravinsky's Capriccio – both of them light-hearted, fun-filled works. Although Strauss was only twenty-one when he wrote Burleske, now heard in concert for the first time in Iceland, the piece was one of his personal favourites, and he even considered it one of his best compositions. Stravinsky's 1929 Capriccio, another humorous and ebullient piece, is reminiscent of Poulenc.

Then the ensemble will rejoice in the Concerti Grossi by some of the Italian masters of the Baroque era. Tartinis trills imitating the singing birds of Piran, Vivaldi's lively mediterranean Spring and the warm winds from the south will hopefully bring the audience to blissful spring spirits.

    Signora Langbrók

    3 events in May 2017

Hallgerdur Nylon Op -play (.not an opera and not a musical...somewhere in between :) ) The most famous female character of the Icelandic Sagas, Hallgerdur Langbrók, Icelandic "femme fatale" The show is performed by Elsa Waage. Piano accompaniment by Antonia Hevesi. Assistant Iris Sveinsdóttir The show focuses on Hallgerdur Langbrók and her visit to Kaldalón Harpa in search of a haven. She has been roaming between earth and heaven for about 1000 years after being shut out in both Hell and Heaven. Hallgerdur shares her story with the audience. She considers the "Langbrók" ( woolen long johns ) to be the basis of all her misfortunes. If she hadn´t been constantly itching from those damn woolen pants she would have turned out much more loving and kind, instead of a temperamental, vindictive and quarrelsome "femme fatale". She completely falls for the 20th century, the era of the nylon stocking. She is confident that had she lived then she would have had become a diva such as Callas, Dietrich, Monroe, Piaf, Hepburn, and fellow Icelandic icons Elly Vilhjálms, Maria Markan and others. These women all had nylon stockings in common!!!! " Signora Langbrok " is an entertaining narrative that intertwines the story of the Saga legend with the music of these more recent nylon DIVAS. She sings some of their most famous songs, combining both international and Icelandic music. Duration: approximately one hour with no intermission Performance in English

    Iceland Symphony: Carmen Fantasy

    18.05.17 | Time 19:30

Instrumental virtuosi of the 19th century often composed medleys of the most popular arias from the hit operas of the day, frequently demanding all but the impossible from the performer. Most of these medleys are long since forgotten, but one that is not is the still-fresh Carmen Fantasy by Spanish violin virtuoso Sarasate. The work includes all of the most popular themes from Bizet's opera, with pyrotechnic challenges for the violinist interspersed with a passionate orchestral accompaniment.

    Iceland Symphony: Ibragimova plays Brahms

    26.05.17 | Time 19:30

Alina Ibragimova is among the most intriguing violinists to appear on the scene in recent years. A dedicated performer of works ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary, she has performed all of Beethoven and Mozart's violin sonatas in Wigmore Hall and was artist-in-residence at the 2015 Proms festival. Brahms' glorious Violin Concerto is one of the composer's most frequently performed works, with its almost other-worldly balance of the melodic and the majestic, the exalted and the earthy.
